Rain doesn’t stop Jutanugarn from advancing at Girls’ Junior
Olympia Fields, IL (Sports Network) – Stroke-play medalist Ariya Jutanugarn posted an impressive 8 & 6 victory over Amy Lee in Friday’s semifinals at the U.S. Girls’ Junior Championship.
Jutanugarn battled the rain early at Olympia Fields Country Club in a 1-up victory over Gabriella Then in the quarterfinals, but it almost wasn’t to be. She fought off four separate deficits and a 2-hour, 13-minute rain delay to capture the match in the last three holes.
It was a different story in the semis, where Jutanugarn never dropped a hole en route to the easy victory.
Jutanugarn, who posted her largest margin of victory against Lee, advanced to face Dottie Ardina in Saturday’s 36-hole championship. Ardina came through late to beat Yu Liu, 2 & 1.
Ardina, the 38th seeded player in the bracket, was all square with Yu after 15 holes before winning the 16th and 17th to secure a berth in the final.
The match between Ardina and Yu was much closer throughout, with neither player taking more than a 1-up lead until Ardina won it on No. 17. Yu led for three holes after a birdie at the first, but Ardina squared the match on the fourth and went ahead for the first time on the fifth.
Yu quickly recovered with a birdie at the sixth to square the match again, and the pair halved each of the next six holes before Ardina moved ahead on the 13th.
Yu, though, drew even with Ardina once again on the 14th, setting up the exciting finish.
Jutanugarn and Lee halved the first two holes before Jutanugarn took the lead for good with wins on the third and fourth holes. After halving the fifth, Jutanugarn posted three consecutive wins to take command of the match. After Lee double-bogeyed the 12th, Jutanugarn clinched the match.
Ardina reached the semis with a 5 & 4 victory over Summar Roachell earlier Friday.
