The trade winds in Major League Baseball leading up to the deadline this week are no longer just winds.

The San Francisco Giants won the Carlos Beltran sweepstakes on Wednesday, acquiring the outfielder from the New York Mets along with cash considerations for prospect pitcher Zach Wheeler.

Beltran arrives in the Bay Area with a .289 average, 15 homers and 66 RBI. Wheeler, a righty, was considered a top prospect in the Giants’ organization.

In a more surprising move yesterday, Colby Rasmus wound up north of the border.

The move was complicated.

The three-team deal started with Toronto trading reliever Jason Frasor and pitcher Zach Stewart to the Chicago White Sox for third baseman Mark Teahen and starter Edwin Jackson.

The Jays then flipped Jackson along with relievers Octavio Dotel and Mark Rzepczynski plus outfielder Corey Patterson to the St. Louis Cardinals for Rasmus and pitchers Trever Miller, Brian Tallet and P.J. Walters.

The Blue Jays are viewed as the clear winner in the blockbuster, having acquired a 24-year-old former first-rounder who already has a 23-homer season to his name.
